And the nominees are...
The Emmy Nominations were announced today, and boy is the Academy boring. This year, it's not just familiar faces from years past, but a lack of diversity in the nominees is the real kicker. So, I'm here to pour over the nominees list and add my two cents.
Oustanding Lead Actor (Comedy)
Bernie Mac (Bernie Mac Show), Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond), Matt LeBlanc (Friends), Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Eric McCormick (Will & Grace)
--Not too bad here. I'd drop Romano & McCormick, and toss in John C. McGinley & Zach Braff (Scrubs)
Outstanding Lead Actor (Drama)
Michael Chiklist (The Shield), Peter Krause (Six Feet Under), James Gandolfini, Kiefer Sutherland, Martin Sheen
--Emmy people please stop fawning over The West Wing & The Sopranos. They've lost their buzz. It's time to move on. How about Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) or Dennis Haysbert (24)?
Outstanding Lead Actress (Comedy)
Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond), Jennifer Aniston (Friends), Jane Kaczmarek (Malcon in the Middle), Sarah Jessica Parker, Debra Messing (Wll & Grace)
--What a snoozer. Take everybody out but Aniston, toss in Lisa Kudrow, Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls), Wanda Sykes (Wanda at Large), & Courtney Cox-Arquette
Outstanding Lead Actress (Drama)
Jennifer Garner, Marg Helgenberger, Francis Conroy (Six Feet Under), Edie Falco (Sopranos), Alison Janney (West Wing)
--Again with the repetitiveness. Replace Janney with Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy) and it's a little better.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Curb Your Enthusiasm, Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends, Sex & The City, Will & Grace
--Curb Your Enthusiasm was fresh, Friends was good, the rest were sub-par. Toss in Gilmore Girls, Scrubs somewhere in that mix.
Outstanding Drama Series
The West Wing, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, 24, CSI
--Just cause Alias made no sense sometimes doesn't mean it shouldn't get the love 24's been getting. Sopranos & West Wing again? C'mon people. This is starting to look like an all-star ballot. The same names get in year after year cause nobody knows any better.
Outstanding Reality/Competition Program
AFI 100 Years Special, Amazing Race 3, American Idol 2, Bob Hope Special, Survivor
--what kind of category is this exactly? A list is now a competition? Retarded. Survivor, with its best season in years, should win this hands down.
Outstanding Commercial
Angry Chicken (Nike), Fish (PBS), The Osbournes (Pepsi Twist), The Sheens (Visa), Squares (VW Beetle)
--As mentioned in the email edition of the PCD, "Squares" is one of my faves. I can't argue with any of these though, and would be pleased to see "Angry Chicken" win as well.
Outstanding Animated Program
As Told By Ginger, Kim Possible, Futurama, The Simpsons, SpongeBob Squarepants
--Where's Samurai Jack? King of the Hill? C'mon, people. I will say though that the Simpsons nominated episode "Three Gays & A Condo" was one of my favorites from the last few seasons.
Finally. much love for the Daily Show with 3 nods (Jon Stewart, Writing, Variety Program), the late Show with 4 (Writing, Variety Program) and Late Night (Writing, Variety Program). But where's the love for Conan as performer/host?
And finally, can someone please explain how the eternally unfunny Saturday Night Live can garner nominations for writing and outstanding variety program? Wake up Academy voters!!!
I am done talking now.
